Excerpts Noah and his Family: 1: The first time grace is mentioned in the Bible is found in Genesis 6:8. “But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.” Why do we need grace? Is this essential to our Christian experience? These are questions which will be answered in this study concerning the subject of grace and its importance to the Christian life. Noah and his family lived to please the Lord even though others around them were living ungodly lives. For this reason, God said it repented Him that He had made man. “And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.” (Genesis 6:6). If at that time God felt the deep hurt of man’s vast state of immorality, what do you suppose He is feeling right now? Noah’s attitude towards immorality is evidence that although sin is around us, we do not have to fall into its quagmire of godlessness and hedonistic behaviours. What is happening today is the fulfilment of II Timothy 3:1-9. What is Grace: 2. Ephesians 2:8-9 “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: (it is) the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” Hebrews 10:29, “Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under-foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?” The short answer to “What is grace” is that it is God’s unmerited favour. Grace is a process as with all other Christian acquisitions such as faith, sanctification, holiness and so much more. Grace can also be identified as Fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). Grace is an adornment of spirituality evidenced by the indwelling Holy Spirit (I Peter 3:4). Clearly, grace is the foundation of our salvation. Therefore, as the basis we must continue to build upon this initial impartation as we grow in the knowledge of Christ Jesus. We need grace to stay humble, strong, and stable. At the time of our new birth, we receive grace; but it does not stop there. We must daily seek for grace to help us throughout our Christian walk with Christ (Hebrews 4:16). We cannot and will not survive as Christians; true believers in Christ without the sustaining power of grace in our lives. The Lord Jesus noted to Paul in his time of weakness, “My grace is sufficient for you” (II Corinthians 12:9). We will never be able to exhaust the spirit of grace. Being a spirit, we receive grace when we ask for it (Hebrews 4:16). Zechariah 12:10. How to Obtain Grace: 3 – Hebrews 4:16, “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” James 4:6: “But he gives more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resists the proud, but gives grace unto the humble.” Proverbs 3:34: “Surely he scorns the scorners: but he gives grace unto the lowly.” To obtain this grace, we must study the word because it is powerful and can perform mighty works in our lives (Hebrews 4:12). We need the word because it is inspired by God and is able to make us strong and stable in Christ (II Timothy 3:16-17). It is from the word we learn about God, His Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. There is a difference between saving grace which we receive at the time of salvation; and sustaining or what could be called functional grace. Saving grace is the initial impartation which brings us into the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ by faith through the Holy Spirit (John 1:17). Functional grace is what we need daily; moment by moment to stay saved and to live the Christian life and to overcome satanic forces which constantly come against us. Why Do We Need Grace: 4 – II Peter 3:18, “But grow (in) grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.” Galatians 5:22-23, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.” Read John 15:1-7 2 Peter 3:18, “But grow (in) grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.” In this passage we are encouraged to “grow in grace.” Since we are saved and know it, why do we need to grow? How can this be achieved? What is grace? Why is grace so important to my walk with Christ having made the decision to follow Him? Being saved, what else do I need? Why grace? We need grace to live the Christian life the way God intends us to do. Without grace we cannot survive as true Christ-like people. There are many people claim Christianity, but their lives say something completely different. They are like whited sepulchres Jesus spoke about [Matthew 6:27]. They pretend on the outside [painted with white wash], but their hearts are far from God. They have the walk and the talk; but Jesus does not know them [Matthew 7:23].
