Study of the Word

Search the scriptures;

And the Word

was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”
John 1:14

You can know God by studying His Word.

Knowing God through the Word

Study of the Word

Purpose for Studying the Word

A study in theology gives the student access to the deeper things of God. They learn about His love towards mankind, His forgiveness, love, and mercy. The student learns that although God is merciful, He requires total obedience to His word. However, when we commit sins, He forgives us because He remembers our weaknesses.

Psalm 103:14For he knows our frame; he remembers that we are dust."

The Word of God is a lamp that lights our path throughout life.

Psalm 119:105

"Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path."

Study of the word teaches us that there is only one way to know God, and this is through Jesus Christ. "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." John 14:6.

He is the only way to salvation.

"Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved."

Acts 4:12

Program Description

Although an individual may have intellectual or spiritual understanding of theology from experiential learning, or other; yet for the minister called by God that person needs formal learning for training and preparation. Moreover, a course in Theology gives a wider perspective of the way we use the Bible and its importance to our lives, while it also uncovers the attributes and character of God, His Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit.

To give a fair description of theology we can clearly say that it is study of the word (II Timothy 2:15); which gives clearer understanding concerning the purpose for which those instructions were given to mankind by God (2 Timothy 3:16-17; I Peter 1:20-21). A course in theology enables the student to gain information through research reports, and historical evidence from theologians and others to obtain truth and understanding of the written word. Theology can also give explanation relating to the nature and character of God and His relation to His creation.

Similar to other learning experience, theology may include specific thoughts and ideologies from other religious entities to compare and contrast evidence gleaned from research and the written word. This type of study is normally carried out in religious institutions where the promotion of religious beliefs is part of the mission.

For the minister, a study in theology is necessary to fulfill the instructions from 2 Timothy 2:15, "Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman who needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." Moreover, we learn through experience and training.

Even if the person was not directly called to be a minister, each believer should have some knowledge of the word in order to give a reasonable response when confronted concerning what he or she believes, and why that conviction is important.

I Peter 3:15-16 [KJV]. "But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asks you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ."

The Word of God.

Forever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven.

Psalm 119:89

“…I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary (food).” Job 23:12b

And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every (word) that proceeds out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.”

Deuteronomy 8:3

But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.” Matthew 4:4

"Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee." Psalm 119:11

"Thy word (is) a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." (Psalm 119:105).
