Is is better to obey God than go our own ways
Numbers 20:7-11
And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink.
And Moses took the rod from before the LORD, as he commanded him. And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock, and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock? And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also.o it.
It seems so easy to listen to our own voice or to hear from other people whom we consider to be experts in certain areas of interests. We may have a good reason for doing so, but how often do they fail us. There are also times when God speaks to us and we try to validate the message by asking someone else for confirmation of His Word. Still, there have been times when God gives us a directive; but we choose to go our own way to satisfy an emotion or maybe someone’s advice.
In the passage above relating to Moses, God’s plan was to be sanctified before His people when His servant spoke to the rock so that water would pour. Instead, Moses paid more attention to the aggravation of the disgruntled people who had turned on Him and Aaron. How often we become distracted from what God told us in secret; the instructions He gave us which we should have followed. Yet we either seek advice from others for clarification, or disobey what we were told to do.
There are times similar to Moses when we are faced with pressures, and we allow those situations to dictate our actions, and motives. Moses’ motive here was to “teach the people a lesson” in his response of anger towards them. Notice that because of his disobedience and faithlessness, he struck the rock twice in anger; but God told him to speak to the rock, which we can assume would have only been once. We will always meet with roadblocks if we do not obey God’s instructions.
Nevertheless, although Moses disobeyed God in his anger, His relationship with Him was not lost. However, he paid a price nonetheless because God barred him from entering the Promised Land.
It is possible that many of God’s servants have missed opportunities because of our disobedience even though we continue to minister. Many can look back and say, “I should have done this or that;” but sadly it is often too late.
Read I Samuel 15, which is a similar story of disobedience.
