God’s Grace – 1

A Study on Grace [1]

This is the first segment on a Study on Grace which is very important to the Christian life. We begin with Noah who found grace in the eyes of the Lord. What does it really mean to find grace in the eyes of the Lord? The first time grace is mentioned in the Bible is found in Genesis 6:8. “But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.” What is grace? What does it mean to the believer? What is the writer saying that “Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord? How does anyone acquires grace? Why do we need grace? Is this essential to our Christian experience? These are questions which will be answered in this study concerning the subject of grace and its importance to the Christian life.

Noah Found Grace Concerning the subject of grace, I believe that the story of Noah answers all the questions pertaining to grace. He [found] grace or received grace [favour] because of the type life which he lived in response to his attitude towards God. Noah and his family lived to please the Lord even though others around him were living ungodly lives. For this reason, God said it repented Him that He had made man. “And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.” (Genesis 6:6). If at that time God felt the deep hurt of man’s vast state of immorality, what do you suppose He is feeling right now? Noah’s attitude towards immorality is evidence that although sin is around us, we do not have to fall into its quagmire of godlessness and hedonistic behaviours. What is happening today is the fulfilment of II Timothy 3:1-9.

What was Different about Noah? The Bible tells us that Noah and his family separated themselves from the sinfulness and social evils around them. “These (are) the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man (and) perfect in his generations, (and) Noah walked with God.” (Genesis 6:9). We learn that as Christ-like people although we are in the world, we are not of the world (John 17:14-16). We as believers, must separate ourselves from the world, although we live here. We can be different, but this comes with a cost (Luke 9:23). Similar to Noah and his family, if we choose to live to please God, we too will receive His grace as we remain faithful in this harsh and evil time which we are in today.

The Presence and Influence of Sin Sinfulness has sunk to an all-time low which affects every person upon the face of the earth; from the unborn to the aged. No life is spared from sins destructive intent and the repercussions which follow once it has infiltrated a life, a family, agents of all strata of society, a nation, or the entire world. Sin is destructive and has no leniencies regardless of what social tier it dominates with all manner of filth and indecencies. Sin lives up to its title and character concerning what it is; destructive, godless, contagious, and appears in all forms, shapes, and sizes. Undoubtedly, Noah had the similar distractions which are present today; but he chose to ignore the enticement and the allurement of sin to fulfil in his desire to please God. Paul’s writings in II Timothy 3, is being fulfilled every second of the day all around the globe. We become alarmed concerning the recklessness which we hear about. However, sinfulness has only increased as satanic forces work through all kinds of powers to infiltrate the lives of people and pull them away from God. The word describes those forces very clearly in Ephesians 6:12. “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high (places).” Sin is dressed up in all kinds of garbs to suit the desires of the flesh and to cover its insidious intents. The aim is steal, kill, and to destroy (John 10:10). The only way you can overcome the sinfulness in this world, is to give your heart to Jesus and He will impart the Holy Spirit to keep you day by day as we await the coming of the Lord.
